Last night, Longbridge Chess Club faced Shirley & Wythall in what proved to be a highly competitive and enjoyable evening of chess. Although the overall result wasn’t in favour of the home side, the matches were played in great spirit throughout. Which also provided plenty of positives for Longbridge to take away from the night.

Round 1, 3-1
The first round finished 3–1 to Shirley & Wythall. Both Ben Haines and Gary Mason secured solid draws on the top boards. While Marcus Denham and Lennon Mason were narrowly defeated.
Lennon’s first game was particularly dramatic. After building a strong position, winning material, and holding a healthy advantage on the clock, the pressure of the moment unfortunately led to a costly blunder. Which turned the game around. Naturally disappointed, Lennon took a moment away from the board afterwards to compose himself. But these experiences are an important part of competitive chess. Learning how to handle difficult losses and recover mentally is something every improving player goes through. It is far better to gain those lessons early in a chess journey. Despite the result, there was a lot to be encouraged by in his play.
The second round saw Longbridge bounce back strongly to secure a 2–2 draw overall.
Round 2, 2-2
Ben suffered an unfortunate early queen loss after a blunder in his game, while Gary admitted to simply having an off night at the board. However, Marcus responded brilliantly with an excellent win. One of the standout improvements in his game was his use of time management. Something he has struggled with in previous matches. This time he stayed calm, used his clock effectively, and converted his position confidently to bring home the point for Longbridge.
Lennon also showed fantastic character in his second game. Determined not to let the previous result affect him, he played with confidence and control from the start. He dominated the game and kept his nerves in check throughout. His opponent eventually resigned, giving Lennon a well earned victory and an excellent response after the disappointment of round one.
While the final overall result may not have gone our way, the evening was full of competitive games, valuable experience, and plenty of enjoyable moments around the boards. Shirley & Wythall were fantastic opponents, and the match was played in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere throughout.
We look forward to meeting them again in the future, and next time, hopefully bringing home victories in both rounds.
