Longbridge Chess Club travelled to Solihull this week for a 5800 Rapidplay fixture. But this evening of competitive chess was overshadowed by an unfortunate issue with the team line-ups.
Although the games were played and enjoyed in good spirit, Solihull fielded a team whose combined rating exceeded the competition’s 5800 rating limit by more than 350 points. Under the league rules, this means both matches will be awarded to Longbridge by default. Giving the club an official 8–0 victory.
Unfortunately, this is the second occasion this season that Solihull have exceeded the rating limit in a 5800 fixture. While everyone appreciates the opportunity to play competitive chess, the rating restrictions are in place to ensure fair competition for all clubs taking part.
Despite the fact that the official result would ultimately be decided by the regulations, both teams still played every game over the board. Producing several entertaining contests.
Round 1, 3-1
The first round finished 3–1 in Solihull’s favour on the board. But the official result will be reversed under the competition rules.
John Varilone started strongly with a solid draw on board one against the higher-rated Mike Warden. While Marcus Denham also impressed by holding Spike Bloxham to a draw! Despite facing an opponent rated almost 400 points higher.
Elliott Shurvinton and Lukas Carmesin were unable to find points in their games, although both fought hard throughout.
The second round produced one of our standout performances of the evening.
Round 2, 2-2
Marcus Denham followed up his excellent draw with an outstanding victory over Spike Bloxham. Completing an unbeaten evening against an opponent rated nearly 400 points above him. Scoring 1½ points from 2 games against such strong opposition is a tremendous achievement! One Marcus can be extremely proud of.
John Varilone also enjoyed an excellent evening. Bouncing back from his first-round draw to secure a well earned victory on board one.
Unfortunately, Elliott and Lukas were again unable to find the points they were looking for. But both gained valuable experience against strong opposition.
A special mention goes to Lukas Carmesin, who made his debut in rated league chess for Longbridge. Every competitive chess player remembers their first rated game. While the result didn’t go his way this time, simply taking that first step into league chess is an achievement in itself.
With more experience under his belt, there will no doubt be many opportunities to pick up points in future matches.
Outstanding Performance from Marcus
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Marcus Denham’s performance.
Facing an opponent rated almost 400 points higher, Marcus produced an excellent draw in the first game before following it up with an impressive victory in the second. Performances like these demonstrate just how much his game continues to develop.
This will undoubtedly give him plenty of confidence going into future matches.

The official league result will be recorded as:
- Longbridge 8–0 Solihull (default)
While no one likes to see matches decided by administrative rulings, league regulations exist to ensure fairness for every club competing throughout the season.
Longbridge can now look ahead to the remaining fixtures, taking plenty of positives from the evening. Particularly Marcus’s superb performance and Lukas’s first steps into competitive league chess.
