Longbridge B shared the points with Kidderminster after an evenly matched 2½–2½ encounter in the Worcestershire Chess Association Championship.
Longbridge Chess Club returned to action on Monday evening, 5 October, facing Kidderminster in the Worcestershire Chess Association (WCA) Championship. With both teams fielding sides of a similar overall rating, the match promised to be a competitive contest, and that is exactly how it finished.

Neither team could find a decisive advantage on the scoreboard, with the five-board match ending in a 2½–2½ draw.
Cartwright Holds on Board One
Gavin Cartwright faced the highly rated Joseph Friar on the top board. Despite being out-rated by more than 200 points, Gavin secured a valuable draw, earning Longbridge half a point against a formidable opponent.
On Board 3, Mark Bethel also shared the point, drawing against David Close in another result that helped keep Longbridge level with their visitors.
Maddocks Secures a Full Point
Phil Maddocks produced one of our key results of the evening on Board 4, defeating Simon Tinley to claim a full point.
Phil’s victory proved particularly important in a match where every half point counted. Alongside the draws from Gavin and Mark, it helped Longbridge maintain their challenge throughout the evening.
Peter Lawrence added another half point on Board 5, drawing against David Waud to complete Longbridge’s individual results.
Kidderminster Share the Spoils
Carmelo Tirado Simarro was the only Longbridge player to lose, going down to Alex Eaton on Board 2. That result helped Kidderminster stay in contention, and with the other games producing three draws and one Longbridge win, neither side could pull clear.
The final score was Longbridge B 2½–2½ Kidderminster, a fair reflection of a closely contested team match.
While Longbridge will have been hoping to take the full match points, the draw gives the team another result to build on in the WCA Championship campaign.
With Phil Maddocks securing a win and three teammates contributing draws, Longbridge B showed the value of a collective team effort in a competitive league.
Final score: Longbridge B 2½–2½ Kidderminster.
