Longbridge Chess Club vs South Birmingham, Round 1, 2-2 Draw

The night began in unfortunate circumstances for Longbridge when Elliott Shurvinton accidentally headed to the wrong venue, believing the match was being played at home. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to arrive in time for the start of the first round. This resulted in a default loss on board two. Fortunately, Elliott made it to the correct venue in time for the second round. So he was able to take his place at the board.

Even with the early setback, Longbridge battled well to earn a 2–2 draw in the first match.

Leading the charge was Carmelo Tirado Simarro. He produced an excellent victory on board one against South Birmingham captain Terry Walker. Matt Clarke secured a solid draw, while Katarzyna Kucharek also earned a hard-fought half-point. Considering Longbridge had effectively started the match a point down, a drawn result represented a strong team performance.

Round 2, 3-1

The second round saw Longbridge take complete control, running out convincing 3–1 winners.

Carmelo once again demonstrated his class with a second victory on board one. Completing a perfect evening and setting the tone for the team. Matt followed up his first-round draw with an excellent win. Kat also converted her second game into a full point after another determined performance.

Unfortunately, Elliott was unable to recover from his difficult start to the evening and lost his second game. But simply making it to the venue after the mix-up and getting stuck into the match deserves credit in itself.

A special mention must go to Carmelo, who delivered a flawless 2/2 score against strong opposition on board one. Matt and Kat also deserve praise for their unbeaten evenings, each scoring an impressive 1½ points from their two games.

Overall, this was an excellent result for Longbridge. After overcoming the early disappointment of a defaulted board, the team showed resilience, determination, and plenty of fighting spirit to come away with a well-deserved victory.

Final Scores:

  • Match 1: South Birmingham 2–2 Longbridge
  • Match 2: South Birmingham 1–3 Longbridge

A great evening for the club and another positive result to add to the season’s growing list of successes.
